Best Mexican in K-town. You can quote me on that. I’m referring to Kennedy Town in Hong Kong – if you haven’t heard of it yet, you will soon enough. With its own MTR station only a couple months new, the public transit system will assist in turning the area into the city’s new prime destination. Entrepreneurial eyes have scoured the locale, set up shop, and people are already calling it the next up-and-coming hot spot. In my opinion, the most caliente of them all is Chino… Ay caramba it was our most favorite meal from the trip!
Ask any Herrera sibling what their favorite type of food is and you will hear, “Mexican”, loud and clear. Jon is convinced that over the 9 years we’ve been together he has converted me into a hot sauce and taco epicure. He chooses to ignore it when I tell him I’ve been heaping shredded cheese in between flour tortillas and calling it a quesadilla since 5th grade. Because of him though, I will admit that I have learned to love it all, outside of just queso. This time, we uncovered something together about J’s favorite cuisine – the cultural co-mingling of Japan and Mexico in the kitchen can make for some delicious lineage. Chef Erik Idos is the man, creating Mexican food by way of Japanese ingredients and techniques; this is what one may possibly expect from his 10 years at Nobu (!!) combined with his Los Angeles and Filipino upbringing. The mash up of flavors and his immeasurable experience is seen in his firstborn, dear baby Chino. We ordered a good amount from the menu, finished everything, and loved how each dish carried the rhythms of LA street culture while subtly exuding the esteem of Nobu’s namesake.
